8 effective homemade beauty recipes using Turmeric

Turmeric has several cosmetic benefits which make it ideal for use in any beauty regimen. Read further to learn how you can prepare some practical and useful homemade beauty recipes using turmeric, right in the comfort of your own kitchen!

Some days ago I had written a post on the amazing uses of turmeric powder.

Today I will share with you some useful, practical and effective homemade beauty recipes using turmeric.

1. Fairness Mask recipe using Turmeric

If you are bothered by a dull and dark-complexion, try out this homemade beauty recipe using turmeric and simple everyday ingredients.

Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon gram flour (besan), 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1/2 teaspoon lime juice, 1 teaspoon coconut oil and 3 tablespoons of milk cream. (If you have oily skin, you can leave out the oil and replace the milk cream with milk or water)
Wash your face and pat dry. Massage the cream gently onto your face in small circular motions for a few minutes and end by applying an even layer of the cream onto your face.
After 30 minutes, wash it off with warm water and a mild facial soap. Do this 2 – 3 times a week until you notice a difference.

2. Anti-acne face pack

Use this homemade anti-acne pack daily if your skin is prone to acne/pimples. This pack is prepared using turmeric powder and neem leaves.

Take 15-20 neem leaves and grind them to a paste. To this, add 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder. Add 1 tablespoon of milk and some gram flour to get a thick paste.
Apply this paste evenly onto your face after washing and drying. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash off with plain warm water.

3. Under eye pack

Remedy those dark circles under your eyes with this simple homemade under eye pack.

Make a smooth paste using 1 teaspoon of gram flour, a tablespoon of lime juice, 2-3 tablespoons of fresh tomato puree and a teaspoon of turmeric powder.
Wash your face with a mild soap and apply this paste to the affected area. Allow the mixture to dry onto the skin and then rinse off gently, with warm water.
Use this pack 3-4 times a week to lighten the dark circles under your eyes.
NOTE: Prevent dark circles by getting adequate sleep at night. It is more important than you think. Read Sleeping Matters for more.

4. Lightening pack for dark elbows and knees

Turmeric can also be used to lighten dark elbows. If you have this problem, try out the following homemade beauty recipe using turmeric.
Make a thick paste of two heaped tablespoons of gram flour with 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder, two tablespoons of milk and one teaspoon lime juice.
Apply the paste on the affected area and once it dries, wash it off with warm water and mild soap. Lastly dab the area with some rose water.
Repeat this process at least twice a week for effective results.

5. Lighten underarms using this turmeric recipe

Lighten those dark underarms using this simple recipe.
Take a teaspoon each of curds (yoghurt), lemon juice in a bowl. To this add 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons of gram flour, to get a thick paste. Apply this paste onto the underarms and leave it on for 30 minutes (No, you do not need to stand with your hands up in the air during this time!!)
After 30 minutes, wash it off with warm water and soap. Do this twice a week, preferably before a bath (to control the mess factor!)

6. Anti-dandruff Oil

Tried everything for dandruff and nothing seems to work? Try this homemade recipe for anti-dandruff turmeric oil. Use it at least once a week.

Heat 1/4 cup of coconut oil (You can use any other hair oil, but I recommend coconut oil because of its own beneficial properties. You could even use VCO if you like). Mix very little oil with 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder to get a paste. Add this paste to the hot oil and and stir it in well. allow the turmeric powder to steep in the oil until just warm.
Massage the oil, while still warm, onto your scalp. Wrap a hot towel around your head to allow the oil to penetrate into your scalp. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes (If possible, even overnight) and then shampoo off as usual.
Be careful not to over-shampoo your hair.

7. Facial hair removal mask

This homemade hair removal mask is popularly used in India, to get rid of facial hair. It is very effective in decreasing facial hair growth and arresting regrowth, if used regularly.
In a bowl, take 2 tablespoons gram flour and add to it 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder. To this add 1 tablespoon of milk and mix . Add water as required to get a smooth paste.
Apply this paste onto the affected area, in the direction of hair growth. Allow to dry and then rub off vigorously with a damp (NOT wet) cloth in the opposite direction of growth.
Do this daily and the unwanted hair growth will eventually reduce.

8. Bath scrub recipe using Turmeric

This homemade curd cream should be used weekly or even fortnightly. It not only cleanses the skin, but also removes any skin blemishes.
Mix together 2 tablespoons each of curds and gram flour. To this, add 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder and mix well.
Apply this cream onto the body and rub it in well. Follow this up with a warm bath as usual. Although, you can take a bath immediately after application, it is more effective if you could wait 30 minutes.

Please note that turmeric might stain the skin yellow. But this is temporary and mild (depending on your skin colour). So, try these remedies on a weekend or when you can stay indoors.

  1. Thanks Susan. It does have a mild smell. But, tolerable. And it goes off one washed. The oil may smell stronger because it is concentrated. Never tried the oil though.

  2. Another great post Kimberly, I'll be trying some of these. Do the neem leaves smell? I bought some neem oil and I threw it away because I really didn't like the smell.
